Applesauce Day is one of my favorite books about apples! Maria and her family visit an apple orchard and pick apples. Then it’s time to turn the apples into applesauce! Every year they use the special pot that has been in the family for generations to make applesauce. I really enjoy the generational use of this same pot in this fun story as they spend quality time together and create new memories together. Maria gets to learn to make applesauce right by her grandma’s side as she hears stories of when her grandma was a little girl making applesauce with her mother!

First they wash the apples. Then Grandma cuts them into quarters. Follow each step along the way, as everyone helps to make delicious applesauce #RecipeIncluded!

This is a great book to request from your local library or you can purchase the book on Amazon if you decided, like me, that this is one that you would like to add to your home library.

Author, Lisa, also created a fun Teachers guide which helps the student: 1) Develop math and science skills, 2) Restate sequencing and order, 3) Follow multi-step instructions, and 4) Identify the characteristics of apples.

REVIEWS From Readers

Dottie says this book is Educational “The history of apples from picking to cooking. It was great for children to understand the process. My great great niece and nephew love to go to the orchard every year and pick apples and come home to make applesauce and apple butter. My niece teaches 4 year olds and they had a field trip to the orchard and she read the book to the students. They were very excited to know about the apples.”

McM says “This book will bring back sweet, sticky, and tiring memories of childhoods spent canning and making applesauce. It also provides the suburban and urban kids a taste of what the countryside has to offer and where applesauce comes from. The gentle text and joyous images make a wonderful read aloud book, while skillfully and subtly exposing kids to science, plant science, cooking, and family traditions. The apple facts and recipe in the back further spur interest in apples and applesauce. For instance, did you know applesauce has been in orbit?”

CM says, “A wonderful read-aloud picture book about a family’s multi-generational tradition of making applesauce — from loading the special pot into the car, to picking the apples to heading to grandma’s house for the applesauce cooking (and eating). Poetic language pairs with exuberant illustrations in this cheerful, cozy tale. Highly recommended!”

Easy Honey Apple Yogurt Dessert in a Glass By Dani’s Cookings

I  always loved apples! They might not be the most interesting and exciting fruit but they are healthy, fresh and reliable. That’s the fruit you will always find on the markets, in all seasons and almost everywhere in the world. And if you buy too many apples you don’t need to worry much about them as they are the most long lasting fruit I know. Apples are great to eat on their own and they are great in desserts as well! And as it is autumn and apples are everywhere around us, I couldn’t help but prepare a tasty apple dessert. SEE FULL RECIPE HERE!
